Rent the dress

The Daddy Daughter Dance is one of my favorite events each year that I don’t even go to! It’s been a special outing for Andy and Charlie every year.

Each year this event comes after I have bought her a special occasion dress for Christmas programs and/or our family fall photos. Sure … she could wear it again but I like to have something new to wear for special events and I know she does too. I didn’t feel like spending a lot of money on one though and I knew she would only wear it once. I also prefer to have unique pieces that not everyone would have (didn’t want to go to Target for this). I have always loved Tutu du Monde dresses and have wanted one for years but couldn’t bring myself to buy one. I follow a few dress rental shops for kids so I started checking it out a few weeks before the dance.

I found this unicorn dress I knew Charlie would LOVE at Rainey’s Closet so I went ahead and scheduled the dress to arrive the Thursday before the dance for a 5 day rental and I would return on Monday after the event. I went ahead and picked out two accessories to be included so I could get free shipping. Done! Now for the twist. The dress came via UPS and it even came EARLY … but we had bad weather and the dance got postponed. GREAT. I quickly hopped on their site to see their policies and emailed their customer service. They got back to me right away and let me know I could extend the rental for a week to make it a 10 day rental for a small fee and it worked out since no one had rented the dress after us. Perfect. Crisis averted.

The day of the dance I took the dress out of the garment bag and did some light steaming and it was ready to go. Charlie was in LOVE with it and felt so special you could tell. Her smile is always SO big on this night. She went to dinner with her daddy, the dance, and they even went out for ice cream after. When she got home I helped her take it off and immediately put it back in the garment bag and stuck the return label on the outside and took it to UPS the next morning. SO EASY. You don’t have to dry clean it they do that for you which makes sense. I did opt to include a small insurance fee on my order in case she spilled on it and she had ketchup, juice and ice cream that night and somehow we got through it with no spills. A small miracle.

If you are looking for a way to get a special dress I recommend trying it out! It would be a great idea for birthday photos/parties, a tea party, flower girl dress, etc. I loved it and will definitely be doing it again.

Fun Fact: I got this coat from Mac & Mia last fall for her thinking I was being a little extra for having my 6 year old have a faux fur coat … but she has gotten SO much use out of it. Any time she has been dressed up she wears it (and it looks a lot nicer than her everyday coat) and if it’s not completely freezing she chooses to wear it instead of her warmer Gap coat.
